Away to Western 2s

An almomst full-strength squad travelled through to Milngavie for what was going to another opportunity to grab some points for the 3s and get us back to mid-table respectability.
Even the old-timers made an effort and arrived at the pitch fully 15 minutes before the whistle went - splendid stuff.
The game started well and we imposed our will on the game, again the right-hand partnership of Coaton-Lamb creating a lot of positive possession and territory. Even Stumpy got into the act, crashing a skidder right to left through the D, where one of the well-schooled youngsters tipped it in from around his shins - Sam getting off the mark for the season.
Things continued to go well, with lots of half-chances, but not many of them snapped up.
Shortly before half-time, a good turn over created a simple 2v1 for Gordy, who calmly took his time before slotting it past the keeper. We even had time still for Weavers to hit the inside of both posts, but not score!
Western re-doubled their efforts from the re-start but made a real clanger - Mitch's looming presence over their CB gifted him an opportunity for which he didn't need another invitation. 3-0 and seemingly coasting. We then played a terrible 10 minutes during which time they scored a simple goal. Fortunately we weathered the storm and then managed to get a stranglehold back over the flow of the game, easing out for a 3-1 win.
First back-to-back wins of the season, a 4-4 start and 5th in the league. Sadly, double-checking the league table only riled me further when I realised that if we had taken points from the Inverleith game (possible) then we could have been in 2nd place, behind our own undefeated 2nd XI: such are the ambitions at Grange HC.
