The holidays had taken their toll on the 6XI squad and it was great to have reinforcements in the shape of Pal Diamonte, Mike Pennyslot and the fans' favourite Tam Frenzie. Unfortunately they were unable to make much of an impression on a talented Uni side who passed the ball around at pace and always seemed to have a spare man available.
Despite this it was still scoreless at half time and hope began to rise that perhaps we could repeat our somewhat unbelievable achievement of last season (beating Kelburn 3s 3-2). All we needed was a couple of clear chances and their defenders to go to sleep.
Didn't happen.
Instead the Uni upped the pace even more and twice in quick succession they found a spare man at the back post to score with a tap-in. As a result we raised our game and eventually made some good chances, but were unable to take advantage.
A third goal in the last few minutes killed off the tie. Despite this it was a good effort by Grange who have been reminded that there is a lot to be gained from quick, hard passing and movement off the ball. If only we had younger legs (or is it time for a new sweatshirt?).
