We started where we finished last week, playing awful hockey. The first twenty minutes was a write off, but then things started to improve. A tactical switch to push Wyeth up to the top of a diamond midfield paid dividends within seconds. He picked up the ball at the top of the circle and slotted it home (a stroke of genius, McNally would later claim).
1-0 at half time, but not an overly impressive performance.
The second half was a little different in that Cala came at us even harder than in the first half and it was disappointing, but not surprising, when they equalised.
Over the season we have had to work incredibly hard to win matches and this was exactly what we did. Our basics and decision making was still a bit ropey, but there was no lack of commitment.
A great run from Dom Jefferies down the right ended up with the ball being slipped to White who, as usual, scored. Simple stuff, but exactly what was needed.
After that it was just hard graft to keep our noses in front, but we survived and a rather fortunate three points lifted us into third place (just behind the 5s) at the turning point in the season.
Merry Christmas!
