May the 4th be with us.

Saturday the 4th May saw Grange Men’s Hockey club pick up 3 Scottish Cups in an amazing day of Cup Final hockey.

First up was an Inter-Club Scottish Reserve Cup Final with the 3's taking on the 5s (known as 4s in the Cup). After an early lead, the 3s failed to capitalise their early dominance and allowed the 5's back into the game. A thrilling first half saw the 5's come back into the game and going into half-time with a 2-1 lead, scoring two hard fought goals. The 5s narrowly missed out on a 3rd goal after scoring just 1 second after the half time whistle was blown. The second half was a tense affair with the 5's digging deep resisting the pressure being piled on by the 3's and managing to secure a 3rd goal courtesy of Sean's dazzling run and a one touch finish from Doug. In the last minute, the 5's captain had a penalty flick saved by 3's goalkeeper - Tario Ahlers. This ends the 3s winning run of the Reserve Cup for the last 4 years but it keeps the Cup in the Grange Family. Hopefully there will be plenty more Interclub finals as was a thrilling & fun affair (maybe more so for the fans) .

Next up, Grange 2s took on Kelburne 2s. Grange appeared to have more of the game at the start but Kelburne brought a strong side and it took everything Grange 2s had to keep themselves in the game after Kelburne took the lead twice, meaning Grange had to equalise to keep themselves in the game. The game finished 2-2 at full time ensuring some tense running penalties. Unable to break the deadlock, the Penalties went to sudden death. Both keepers played very well keeping out the goals but eventually favour fell in Grange’s way allowing Grange to win 4-3.

In the final match of the day, Grange took on Grove Menzieshill in the Scottish Cup. It was the Dundonians who took the lead to start. Some inventive play by Dan Coultas won Grange a penalty corner and it was drag flick expert Coultas who stepped up to finish clinically to level the score. 1-1. The goal saw Grange start to move through the gears and they added a second as half time approached. Cammy Fraser arrived at the top of the D and smashed it low into the bottom right corner to make it 2-1 to Grange. Into the second half and Grove Menzieshill equalised. The longer the game progressed the more nervous the match became, but it was Grange who found the net next. The ball was smashed across goal from the right and Todd Mills popped up at the far post to convert a difficult chance high into the net for 3-2 to Grange. The goal galvanised Grange and they scored another soon after. Shepherdson passed to Duncan Riddell and he found the back of the net to go 4-2 ahead. Grove Menzieshill weren’t done though and got a goal to narrow Grange’s lead to just one goal. Grange did well to hold onto the ball as the match came to a conclusion and they secured a domestic treble with another trophy lift at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

The Grange President (Jonny Baird) also got married which must have brought the entire club good fortune ! Congratulations Jonny & Lea !
