1st game of the season

After a really tough - but good - pre season the 1s had their opening game against Clydesdale.

Word was out - from the Dale's twitter account - that they had a couple of new signings and we knew we'd be in for a hard game!

We travelled through with a squad of 15 and looking pretty snazzy in our new warm up tops (some still available for purchase for £5 at the clubhouse from Andy Graham).

Both sides started with really good pace, we had a couple of good chances to go 1-0 up, their goalie saved a corner and shortly after we got another corner that fizzed just wide of the left post - if Bru had an extra wheetabix on Saturday morning then it might have snuck in!

They scored through a break away - I would comment further but can't remember what happened.

We immediately equalised, after regaining possession in the midfield the ball made it's way to Calum Milne in the 23 who beat a player only to be fowled outside the circle but awarding us a short corner. The first led to a second which was a Robert Barr drag flick deflected by Cammy Fraser on the post. Two crosses were put in to the Clydesdale circle just before half time but to no avail not quite connecting with the intended recipients.

1-1 and a solid effort from the first half.

The game was tight but we were confident that with our bursts through the midfield and fire power up top we could score a couple of goals.

Clydesdale came out of the blocks fast in the second half - with help from the crowd which had swollen to about 80 after a couple of their teams had come back from other games. It's good to see that support and hopefully we can have similar at Fettes this season!

They piled pressure on us at the back, debutants Patrick Longmate and Will Shepherdson coped admirably.

Clydesdale wanted every ball that little bit more than us in the first 5 mins and created a chance down their left hand side with some fast passing hockey to score.

We then pressurised them for the next 15 minutes creating a number of good chances with 2 drag flicks being saved off the line by their left post man.

In total we won 10 short corners, scoring only 1, think it might be easy to see what's coming tomorrow night at training!!

We can take a lot of positives from the first game of the season there were spells of Clydesdale pressure that we mopped up and we had a lot going forward.

Onwards and upwards ... Watsonians next week and we welcome two Aussies across on Tuesday so we should strengthen again!

Final Score: Clydesdale 3 Grange 1
MOM: Andrew Campbell
