Rampant Ryan romps stags home

On another fine Saturday afternoon the 1s ventured up to their old home at Peffermill to take on newly promoted watsonians.

The two Aussies had arrived on Thursday but were ineligible due to a Scottish Hockey by law so were in the stands with pints in hand (they must be related to jake).

On the Saturday morning we had 15 but by 1.30 we had 13 with two late illness/injury call offs. No worries, Jack Hogarth sacked off a Cambridge Uni interview to get down and help out! I'm sure he'll get another!!

We started the game nervously and soupy got sacked just over the 25 by his ex uni teammate Tom 'the fridge' Swarbick who linked up with Craig McCrossan creating a 3 on 1 to put sonians one ahead.

Well that wasn't in the script ...

We got composed and piled on the pressure, some good play led to a chance from Hamish who forced a good save from their GK.

We levelled through Frank Ryan's deflection then just before half time Calum Milne got on the end of a soupy assist to sweep the ball first time into the roof of the net.

We were up at half time - though not everything was looking good. Colin Clarke and new auz lad Todd were nearly finished a bottle of factor 50 ambre soliare and the chat was it was meant to last Todd a whole season. Time to find some shade. So we went to the goal for the team talk Colin positioned himself so the shade of the goalmouth covered his face and we discussed tactics.

What felt like 30 seconds later we were off. We contained a bit of Watsons pressure and ensured we played the majority of the game in their half. Through good pressure and defensive hard work we were able to win a lot of ball and create openings.

We won a couple of corners but neither were to much avail, cammy must have only had time for right shoulder pumping at the gym on Friday night so all the balls were coming out right of the stopper.

A cross from the left from soupy bounced clear to frank who slotted away his second with a first time hit into the right corner of the goal 3-1 and a little breathing space.

With about 10 to go Watsons broke down the right delivering a cross only for the deflection to hit the post.

With 5 left we broke from a sonians attack down the left, the ball then got transferred right twice to Andy Graham on the edge of the 25 who ''rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home'' - well that's how the scotsman reported it.

What really happened ... A mistrap into the Circle meant sprinting after it and getting too close to the goalie, being at the edge of the circle with no puff to dribble further another very heavy touch left my stick and snuck over the line!

Think I prefer the scotsman's account.

Anyway 4-1 and at the end of the day 3 points.

No game this Saturday due to inter district boys (of which grange will have 12 reps across u18 and u16)

if you are dead keen to watch the 1s then they play Kelburne in a friendly on Friday night 730 at Glasgow Accies.
