McNally knew it would be difficult to fill the shoes of former captain Bunker (obviously!) but didn't expect it to be so hard to get a side out.

No less than 9 of last year's 6th XI players left the club this summer, many leaving the country to justify not having to renew their membership. A further 9 potential players were unavailable for this match, so no less than a 9-0 win (or perhaps a 9-9 draw) was expected. Unfortunately that didn't happen, although an early goal by Mot Frenzie* suggested a goal-fest may be on the cards.

Unfortunately the good work was gradually undone as slack passing and basic errors allowed the students back into the game. A scrambled goal leveled the scores and a clean strike from a corner saw Grange go 2-1 down at the interval.

It was a much brighter start to the second half—passes went to our own players who had enough space and time to keep possession… an amazing concept that will serve us well if we can remember it for the rest of the season!

The equaliser came from a mazy run by Frenzie that ended with a reverse stick shot which proved it is possible to put this skill to good effect, if you know what you are doing. Read that last bit again Nick!

Grange continued to press with Cash and Spam Goneaway coming close on several occasions. At the back the partnership of Elder Statesman Bunker and new boy Louis Galloway comfortably kept the much younger, fitter and faster students at bay.

The winner came from the unlikely source of McNally taking on players along the byline, slipping it back to young Spam before rolling the return pass/ricochet into the net.

It was a well deserved victory that came out of the hard work that was put into the second half. We face Edinburgh Uni next week and will have to be a lot more consistent to win our first home match of the year.

Big thanks to everyone who helped us out!
