Unfortunately.
The game was fast and both sides moved the ball around well, but neither side created any real chances. Despite having the majority of the possession the Uni hadn't really troubled us too much–with Miles Ede stomping on anything which came through the centre of the pitch–so it was agonising to watch the ball slowly creep over our goal line after squeezing past Batch's pads.
At half time the score was still 1-0 but we had created enough chances to give us confidence that we could score. And so it proved when good work from Angus Hamilton gave Ricky "Goal Machine" Dunbar a tap in to take his season's total to 6, one ahead of Tam Frenzie, but still two behind "Mad Monty".
That was the turning point of the match, however it didn't turn out well for Grange when the home umpire decided it was time for a flurry of corners, some of which were more justified than others. To be fair, he wasn't helped by his team mates wanting to have a chat with him on their way to play our 2nd XI on the adjoining pitch, but perhaps he could have ignored them when the ball was a few yards away from our circle?
In any case, the net result was three goals in quick succession and no real chance to get back into the match before the final whistle blew.
As had happened in several other games this season, we suffered from failing to concentrate enough in the precious minutes after a goal is scored. The 4-1 scoreline flatters the students, but we have to learn to stop danger from developing until we can get control of the ball again.
Next time, perhaps?
